Der kleine Australier

Auf der britischen Earls Court Show lernte der Australier Harold Lightburn 1958 den Designer Gordon Bedson kennen und bot ihm die Möglichkeit an, seine bei dem britischen Kleinwagenhersteller Frisky Cars Ltd. ins Stocken geratenen Pläne eines kleinen Zweisitzers zu realisieren. Harold Lightburn träumte davon, den Australiern einen sportlichen, kleinen Wagen anzubieten, der in nahezu jeder Garage als Zweitwagen parken sollte.

 

Bei der Lightburn Vehicles Ltd. ging Gordon Bedson das Projekt mit großem Tatendrang an und nahm bei seiner Übersiedlung 50 Motoren von England nach Australien mit. Bei den Motoren handelte es sich dabei um 493 cm³ große Fichtel & Sachs Zweizylinder-Zweitakter, die ursprünglich für den Messerschmitt TG 500 - umgangssprachlich Tiger genannt - vorgesehen waren und nun in Australien lagerten. In Harold Lightburn´s Zeitplan sollte der kleine Sportwagen in zwölf Monaten serienreif werden. Der Verlauf der gesamten Entwicklung dauerte aber schließlich doch wesentlich länger als anfangs erwartet wurde und erst im Jahr 1961 wurden die ersten Modelle vollständig montiert. Der Zeta-Sport war einfach aufgebaut und wog nur knapp 400 kg. Der Fahrer mit seinem Beifahrer saß im Verhältnis weit vorne in der GFK-Karosserie, wodurch der deutsche Motor auf Höhe der Hinterradachse eingebaut werden konnte. Der Zugang zum Motor erfolgte über eine kleine Heckklappe. Eine Frontscheibe hielt den Fahrtwind von den Passagieren ab, Schutz von oben bot jedoch nur eine anknüpfbare Stoffplane, die das spärliche Innenleben überdachte. Allerdings wurde von den anfangs vorhandenen 50 Fichtel & Sachs Zweitaktern offenbar etliche in der Zwischenzeit einer anderen Verwendung zugeführt, so dass nur noch 28 Motoren vorhanden waren und demzufolge auch nur 28 Zeta-Sport Wagen auf die 10 Zoll kleinen Räder gestellt werden konnten.

 

Mag dies zunächst als herber Rückschlag empfunden worden sein, da offenbar Motoren eines anderen Herstellers nicht eingebaut werden konnten, so stellte sich schon bald heraus, dass der Zeta-Sport offenbar komplett am Markt vorbei produziert wurde. Selbst die geringe Anzahl von 28 Fahrzeugen ließ sich nämlich überhaupt nicht verkaufen! Sie standen auf Halde und fanden erst im Jahre 1963 im Zuge eines Ausverkaufs ihre Käufer.

The little Australian

In 1958, the Australian, Harold Lightburn met on the British Earls Court Show the designer Gordon Bedson and offered him the possibility to realize his plans of a small two-seater, which were faltering at Frisky Cars Ltd, a British manufacturer of small cars. Harold Lightburn was dreaming to offer the Australian population a sporty and small vehicle which should be parked in nearly every garage as a second car.

 

Gordon Bedson was starting the project with great zest, at Lightburn Vehicles Ltd., and took 50 engines with him during his move from England to Australia. The Fichtel & Sachs two-cylinder two-stroke engines, sized at 493 cm³, which were originally provided for the Messerschmitt TG 500, commonly known as Tiger, were stored now in Australia. According to Harold Lightburn schedule, the small sports car should be ready for series production in twelve months. The total development progress took much longer as initially expected and finally in 1961 the first models were completely assembled. The Zeta Sports was very simple constructed and weighted only just 400 kg. The driver with the front passenger was sitting proportionally near the front in the fiberglass car body, whereby the German engine could be installed at the height of the rear axle. The access to the engine was made via a small tailgate. A windscreen protected the passengers against airstream and only an attachable cloth tarp was offering protection and covering the scarce interior. However, 50 Fichtel & Sachs two-stroke engines, which existed at the beginning, found another use in the meantime, so that only 28 engines were available and therefore only 28 Zeta sports cars were put on its 10-inch wheels.

 

First of all, it could be a major setback as obviously engines from another manufacturer could not be installed. However, it soon turned out that the Zeta-Sport was produced without regard for market demand. That means that even the small number of 28 vehicles could not be sold. They were stockpiled and as late as 1963 they found their buyers according to a sell-off.

La Piccola Australiana

Nel 1958 l’Australiano Harold Lightburn Incontrò durante il British Earls Court Show il Designer Gordon Bedson e gli offri’ la possiblità di realizzare una piccola due posti, Bedson aveva già avuto un’esperienza presso la Frisky Cars Ltd, una piccola casa Britannica di vetturette. Harold Lightburn sognava di offrire alla popolazione Australiana un veicolo piccolo e sportivo che poteva essere posizionato in ogni garage come seconda auto.

 

Gordon Bedson iniziò il progetto con gran gusto, alla Lightburn Vehicles Ltd., e prese ben 50 motori con lui durante il suo spostamento dall’Inghiliterra verso l’ Australia. I Motori Fichtel & Sachs da due cllindri a due tempi, con una cilindrata di 493 cm³, che erano originalmente montati sulla Messerschmitt TG 500, conosciuta anche con il nome di Tiger, erano conservati in Australia.  Secondo il programma di Harold Lightburn, la piccola vettura sportive doveva esser pronta per la produzione in seriein dodici mesi.  Lo Sviluppo iniziale fu più lungo del previsto e finalmente  nel 1961 I primi modelli uscirono dalla fabbrica. La  Zeta Sports fu di costruzione molto semplificata e peso soltanto 400 KG. Il Guidatore assieme al passeggero erano seduti propozionalmente vicino il frontale realizzato in fibra di vetro, per cui  il motore Tedesco dovette essere installato all’altezza dell’asse posteriore.  L’accesso al motore era possibile tramite un piccolo portellone. Un parabrelzza proteggeva I passeggeri contro le correnti d’aria e solo un telo di stoffa attaccabile offriva protezione e proteggeva gli scarni interni. Tuttavia, 50 Motori Fichtel & Sachs da due tempi che erano già posseduti all’inizio, trovarono altro utlizzo nel frattempo, quindi soltanto 28 motori  erano disponibli e quindi soltanto 28 Zeta sports cars furono prodotte.

 

All’inizio questa cosa Poteva essere una grandeuna grande sconfitta dato che  motori realizzati da altri costruttori erano incompatibli con la struttura della vetturetta. Tuttavia dopo un lasso di tempo la Zeta-Sport fu prodotta infischiandosene della richiesta sul mercato. Questa decisione poteva significare anche il fatto che il cospiscuo numero di 28 vetture poteva  rimanere invenduto; quindi le vetturette furono messe in Stock e durante la fine del 1963 Trovarono I loro acquirenti grazie ad una svendita.
