Die Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika sind bekanntlichermaßen ein sehr großes Land und wer es auf den eigenen vier Rädern intensiv erkunden will, braucht einen ziemlich langen Zeitraum dafür. Für US-Bürger ist dies - zumindest in Etappen - eine viel geliebte Art, ihren Urlaub zu verbringen.

In den 1970er Jahren träumte der ehemalige US-Soldat Paul Jones aus Cape Coral in Florida davon, die USA mit einem Motorhome ausgiebig zu erkunden und es reifte in ihm der Plan, sich ein eigenes, passendes Fahrzeug auf die Räder zu stellen. Als Unterbau wählte er das Chassis eines Oldsmobile Toronado. Er war für seine neuen Zweck mit 350 US-amerikanischen Pferdestärken ausreichend motorisiert.

Für die Planung des Aufbaus ließ sich Paul Jones nur von dem einen Wunsch leiten, so viel Luxus wie nur möglich von seinem Haus in seine rollende Unterkunft zu übertragen.

Der Ex-Soldat baute 1971 einen Rahmen aus Aluminium, verkleidete ihn mit weiteren Alu-Paneelen und schuf damit einen tendenziell eckigen Kastenaufbau, der auch innen nahezu keine Rundungen aufwies. Damit war es ihm leichter, das gefertigte Interieur anzupassen. Der Drang nach hohem Komfort kam nicht nur in einer - zur Fahrzeuggröße - relativ großen Küchenzeile mit Kalt- und Warmwasser, einen Kühlschrank, Kochplatten und zwei Spülbecken zum Ausdruck. Im Aufenthaltsbereich diente die Sitzgelegenheit nachts als ausklappbares Bett für ihn und seine Frau. Ein kleines Badezimmer fand in dem Wagen ebenfalls Platz und sogar eine Dusche baute er ein. Per Antennen konnten TV und Radioprogramme im ganzen Land empfangen werden. Paul Jones nannte seinen Wagen `Star Streak I` und spulte am Ende seiner Reise über 100.000 Meilen - umgerechnet fast 161.000 Kilometer - auf den Tachometer.

The United States of America is known to be a very large country and if you want to explore it intensively on your own four wheels, you need quite a long period of time. For US citizens, this is – at least in stages – a much-loved way to spend their holidays.

In the 1970s, former US soldier Paul Jones from Cape Coral in Florida dreamed of exploring the USA extensively in a motorhome and the plan matured in him to put his own suitable vehicle on wheels. He chose the chassis of an Oldsmobile Tornado as the base. It was sufficiently motorized for its new purpose with 350 US horsepower.

When planning the structure, Paul Jones was guided by only one desire – to transfer as much luxury as possible from his house to his mobile accommodation.

In 1971, the ex-soldier built an aluminum frame, clad it with more aluminum panels and thus created a box structure that tended to have an angular box structure that also had almost no curves on the inside. This made it easier for him to adapt the finished interior. The urge for a high level of comfort was not only expressed in a – for the size of the vehicle – relatively large kitchenette with cold and hot water, a refrigerator, hotplates and two sinks. In the lounge area, the seating area served as a fold-out bed for him and his wife at night. Ther was also room for a small bathroom in the car and he even installed a shower. TV and radio programs could be received throughout the country via antennas. Paul Jones named his car ‘Star Streak I’ and reeled off over 100,000 miles – the equivalent of almost 161,000 kilometers – on the speedometer at the end of its journey.

Les États-Unis sont connus pour être un très grand pays et pour l'explorer intensément en voiture, il faut un certain temps. Pour les Américains, c'est – au moins par étapes – une façon très appréciée de passer leurs vacances.

Dans les années 1970, l'ancien soldat américain Paul Jones, originaire de Cape Coral, en Floride, rêvait d'explorer les États-Unis en camping-car. L'idée de construire son propre véhicule adapté a mûri en lui. Il a choisi le châssis d'une Oldsmobile Tornado comme base. Avec ses 350 chevaux, elle était suffisamment motorisée pour cette nouvelle utilisation.

Lors de la conception de la structure, Paul Jones n'avait qu'un seul souhait : se rapprocher le plus possible du confort luxueux de sa maison dans son hébergement mobile.

En 1971, il a construit une structure en aluminium, l'a revêtue de panneaux d'aluminium et a ainsi créé un caisson aux lignes anguleuses, presque sans courbes à l'intérieur. Cela lui a facilité l'aménagement intérieur. Son besoin de confort a permis de concevoir une kitchenette, relativement spacieuse compte tenu de la taille du véhicule, avec eau chaude et froide, réfrigérateur, plaques de cuisson et deux éviers. Le coin salon servait de lit pliant pour lui et sa femme la nuit. Il y avait également de la place pour une petite salle de bain avec une douche. Des antennes permettaient de capter les programmes de télévision et de radio dans tout le pays.

Paul Jones a baptisé sa voiture « Star Streak I » et a affiché plus de 100 000 miles, soit près de 161 000 kilomètres, au compteur à la fin du voyage.
