AMC - als Abkürzung für `American Motors Corporation` - hatte sich Ende der 1960er Jahre zur Aufgabe gemacht, mit einem Mittelmotor-Sportwagen einen Verkaufsschlager zu platzieren und vor allem dem auserkorenen, direkten Rivalen, den Typ Pantera von DeTomaso den Rang abzulaufen.

Bereits früh stand die Bezeichnung für den Wagen fest - AMX/3. Ausgeschriebenen hieß dies `American Motors Experimental `, der dritte Typ.

Die Anzahl der jemals gefertigten Autos ist ungewiss. Zweifelsfrei gab es drei fahrfertige AMX/3, dazu kamen noch zwei, die sich nahezu komplett im Werk befanden. Unter Experten kursiert jedoch die Meinung, es hatte nicht fünf, sondern sechs Fahrzeuge gegeben. Dazu kam wohl noch eine weitere, später aufgebaute Reihe von fünf bis zehn Exemplaren. Mag hinter der tatsächlich aufgebauten Anzahl ein dickes Fragezeichen stehen, so ist es sicher, dass es kein Fahrzeug als Spyder-Typ gab. Doch genau ein solcher tauchte 2002 in Brüssel auf.

Eine Eintaxierung des offenen Wagens war offenbar nicht eindeutig möglich. Einige Experten äußerten die Vermutung, dass der Sportwagen auf dem Chassis des als Nummer neun gefertigten AMX/3 basierte. Doch diese Story mag wohl nicht stimmen. Der Motor stammte von Chevrolet und nicht aus der Fertigung von AMC. Daneben passten auch der Radstand und die Spurbreite nicht mit den Maßen der AMX/3 überein. Optisch wurde ihm zudem eine enge Verwandtschaft abgesprochen. 

Ob jedoch die Version, der Spyder sei ein Ableger des Rennwagen Bizzarrini P 538 aus dem Jahr 1966 der Wahrheit nahekommt, muss auch noch offengelassen werden.

AMC – the abbreviation stood for “American Motors Corporation” – had set itself the task to design a bestseller sports car featuring a mid-engine concept, which was supposed to outstrip the Type Pantera of the direct rival DeTomaso, at the end of the 1960s.

The number of cars ever produced is uncertain. There was no doubt that there were three ready-to-drive cars and two vehicles in the factory, which were almost finished completely. Among experts, however, the opinion circulates that there were not five, but six AMX/3. In addition, there was probably another, later built series of five to ten cars. Although there may be a big question mark behind the actual number built up, all were certain that there was no Spyder type among the AMX/3. But exactly such a design appeared in Brussels in 2002.

An clear assignment of the car was obviously not possible. Some experts suggested that the sports car based on the AMX/3 chassis number 9. But this may not be true. The engine came from Chevrolet and not from the production of AMC. In addition, the wheelbase and track width did not match the dimensions of the AMX/3. Visually, it was also denied a close relationship.

Whether the story that the Spyder is an offshoot of the 1966 Bizzarrini P 538 racing car comes close to the truth is also not verifiable yet.

AMC - "American Motors Corporation" - s'était donnée pour mission de concevoir une voiture de sport best-seller dotée d'un concept à moteur central, censée devancer la Type Pantera de son rival direct DeTomaso, à la fin des années 1960.

Le nombre de voitures produites est incertain. Il ne faisait aucun doute qu'il y eut trois voitures prêtes à rouler et deux presque terminées dans l'usine. Cependant, parmi les experts, l'opinion circule qu'il n'y avait pas cinq, mais six AMX/3. De plus, il y eut probablement une autre série de cinq à dix voitures construites un peu plus tard. Bien qu'il puisse y avoir un gros point d'interrogation derrière le nombre exact, tous étaient certains qu'il n'y eut pas de Spyder parmi les AMX/3. Pourtant, ce Spyder apparut à Bruxelles en 2002.

Certains experts ont suggéré que cette sportive était basée sur le châssis n°9 d’une AMX/3. Mais rien n’est moins sûr. Le moteur provenait de Chevrolet et non de la production d'AMC. De plus, l'empattement et la largeur de voie ne correspondaient pas aux dimensions de l'AMX/3. Visuellement, on ne peut même pas y voir de relation étroite.

Il n'est pas non plus possible de vérifier si, l'histoire selon laquelle le Spyder est une émanation de la voiture de course Bizzarrini P 538 de 1966, est réelle ou pas.
