Eine sehr außergewöhnliche Interpretationsweise eines Campingmobils wurde in den Jahren 1972 und 1973 auf den Messeständen von Toyota präsentiert.

Die Ausstellungsflächen des japanischen Herstellers auf der `Tokyo Motor Show` im Oktober 1972, auf der niederländischen Messe `RAI` im Februar 1973 und der `New York international Auto Show` im April 1973 zierte ein Personenwagen, der auf den ersten Blick wie ein sehr sportlich ausgelegter, durchaus flach bauender und vor allem langgezogener Kombi aussah. Mit einer Gesamtlänge von 4,73 Metern entsprach der optische Eindruck durchaus den tatsächlichen Maßen. Im Heckbereich gaben zwei längliche Fenster den Blick auf das Innere frei und auch im Dach waren gleichgroße Scheiben eingepasst. Dem Coup, dem diese großflächigen Fenster dienten wurde jedoch erst dann erkennbar, wenn sich die beiden seitlichen Teile des Hecks knapp oberhalb der Radkästen zur Seite hin aufklappten und nach außen scherten. Der nun nach oben hin offene Freiraum konnte mit einem passenden Tuch bespannt werden, so dass ein luftiges Zelt auf dem Unterbau des Toyota entstand. Den Betrachtern des Messefahrzeugs war ganz schnell klar, dass es diese Art von voll integrierter Campingeinrichtung in einen Personenwagen in dieser Form bis dahin niemals gab. Dies war aber nur die äußerliche Mutation des Personenwagens zum Camper. Im Inneren konnten im aufgeklappten Bereich zwei ausgewachsene Männer ihr Bett finden und zwei weiteren war es möglich, über das komplette Umklappen der beiden vorderen Sitze eine weitere Schlafstätte zu finden. Es war aber auch möglich, im Heckbereich einen Tisch zu platzieren und zu guter Letzt konnten die Sitzgelegenheiten und der Tisch auch noch aus dem Auto herausgenommen werden. Als weitere Finesse diente die nach unten ausklappbare Hecktüre als große Einstiegshilfe. Zum Leidwesen vieler Messebesucher bekam der ausgestellte - voll funktionsmäßige - Camper-Kombi niemals den Segen zur Serienfertigung.

Unter dem Kürzel RV-2 auf den Messeständen gezeigt, stellte der Wagen eine optische Mischung aus den Toyota Typen Mark II und Crown dar und war größer als RV-1.

A very unusual interpretation of a camper vehicle was presented at Toyota’s exhibition stands in 1972 and 1973.

The exhibition areas of the Japanese manufacturer at the ‘Tokyo Motor Show’ in October 1972, at the Dutch fair ‘RAI’ in February 1973, and at the ‘New York international Auto Show’ in April 1973 featured a passenger car that at first sight looked like a very sporty, flat designed and above all long-drawn station wagon. With a total length of 4.73 meters, the visual impression was quite consistent with the actual dimensions. At the rear of the vehicle, two elongated windows gave view into the interior. Windows of the same size could be also found at the roof of the car. The coup that these large windows served was only recognizable when the two side parts after the front seats were folded up towards the side just above the wheel houses and hinged aside. The now upwardly open space could be covered with a matching cloth so that a well-ventilated tent was formed on the chassis of the Toyota. It was quickly clear to the spectators of the exhibition vehicle that this type of fully integrated camping facility in a passenger car in this form never existed before. But this was only the external conversion of the passenger car to a camper. Once folded up and hinged aside two full-grown men were able to find their bed in the rear and two more beds for the night were provided via the complete folding of the two front seats. It was also possible to fit a table in the rear area and last but not least the seats and the table could also be removed from the car. As a further finesse, the rear door, which could be folded out downwards, served as a great device for an easy entry and exit of the car. To the chagrin of many visitors, the exhibited – fully functional – camper station wagon never received the blessing to go into series production.

Exhibited under the abbreviation RV-2 at the fairs, the car was an optical mixture of the Toyota type Mark II and type Crown and was larger than the RV-1.

Un camping-car très inhabituel est présenté sur les stands d’exposition Toyota en 1972 et 1973.

Les espaces d'exposition du constructeur japonais, installés au Tokyo Motor Show en octobre 1972, puis au salon néerlandais RAI en février 1973 et au New York international Auto Show en avril 1973, présentent une voiture de tourisme qui, à première vue, ressemble à un break très sportif, plat et surtout d’une longueur de 4,73 mètres. L’arrière du véhicule est allégé par deux longs vitrages sur les côtés, présents également sur le toit. Le plus surprenant est que le toit s’ouvre en deux parties et se rabat de chaque côté de la voiture. L'espace ouvert peut ainsi être recouvert d'une simple toile ajustée à fixer ou être équipé d’une tente adaptée au châssis de la Toyota.

Ce type de camping-car, totalement intégré à une voiture particulière n'avait jamais été créé. Une fois les deux parties de toit rabattues de chaque côté, on y trouve un couchage pour deux adultes à l'arrière et deux autres couchages disponibles en rabattant complètement les deux sièges avant. Il est également possible d'installer une table dans la zone arrière et enfin, les sièges et la table peuvent également être retirés de la voiture. Pour plus de praticité, la porte arrière, rabattue vers le bas, est un dispositif ingénieux permettant une entrée et une sortie faciles de la voiture. Au grand dam de nombreux visiteurs, le camping-car exposé - entièrement fonctionnel - n'a jamais reçu l’autorisation d’une production en série.

Présentée sous l'abréviation RV-2 lors des salons, la voiture rappelle visuellement un subtil mélange de la Toyota Mark II et de la Crown. Elle est aussi plus grande que la RV-1.
